Today, 7 years ago, on October 23rd, 2003, God thought the world was ready. Britney released, Me Against The Music, premiering on the NFL Superbowl Half-Time show. Despite reluctance from her record label, who wanted Outrageous, Me Against The Music became the first single from In The Zone when Britney appeared with Madonna at the MTV VMAs and asked her to appear on the track. Co-written and co-produced by Britney, Me Against The Music reached #35 on the USA Hot 100, but was highly successful internationally. The single made Britney the first and the only artist to have Madonna featured on one of her singles.
The brilliant, confident, fresh and funky masterpiece, a duet between the Queen of Pop and her successor, peaked at #1 on the worldwide top 40 chart for 4 consecutive weeks, ending up as one of the best-selling singles of both 2003 and 2004. Despite underperforming in the United States, it had won the 2004 Billboard Music Award for Hot Dance Single of the Year.
The fast-paced dance anthem was critically acclaimed and the critics highly praised Britney's delivery, saying she sounded convincingly sexy and sultry, while her vocals awashed in throaty Prince-isms. It's considered one of the biggest steps towards Britney's musical maturing, since she has emphasized her love for the good time on the track and relished her new role of a nightclub siren. The single featured Britney and Madonna trying to out-dance the track, out-beat the drum, out-pluck the guitar as if they are losing themselves in the music.
The music video was directed by Paul Hunter. It featured Britney looking for Madonna at a party in a warehouse while performing one of the hardest and sharpest choreographies of all-time. In the end, she finally finds her and approaches to kiss her, but Madonna disappears. It reached number one on TRL and stayed there for a record-breaking 20 consecutive days.
